5 Steps To Keep Your PC Safe Online
1. Update Windows
Microsoft regularly releases free downloads to fix security problems with Windows, Internet Explorer and other Microsoft software such as Office. See "how to" below."
2. Install A Firewall
A good firewall such as ZoneAlarm will prevent programs from accessing the Internet without your permission, and block access to your PC from intruders. Even a better solution is to use a hardware firewall that connects between the Internet modem and your PC. This is the best option for secure surfing.
3. Check For Viruses
Malicious virus code can infect your PC's system files and damage your important data. If you don't have a virus checking program, you may want to download a free version from AVG. This is only for personal home use and can be found at: http://free.avg.com/ If this is too confusing, please give us a call or email.
4. Remove Spyware
Spyware is malicious code that tracks your movements on the Internet and can even affect your PC's performance. This gets a little more complicated, as some of the spyware infections are pretty severe and can “take over” your PC. One thing you can do is check out the Add/Remove Programs section in Control Panel. Look for programs that you did not install such as: tool bars, search assistants, free spyware removal programs, etc. Click on the program in the list that you wish to remove and click on the button that shows up that says “Remove”. If your system still acts funny or a little slow, you might want to let us take a look at it, before it gets too bad.
5. Browse More Safely
The latest web browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 offer security features like pop-up blockers and phishing filters to keep you safe when visiting web sites.
See some download links below on the left.
How to download Windows Updates
Some of the steps below may require you to restart your computer, so you may wish to print out a copy of these instructions before you begin. You should also save any work in other windows before continuing.
Note that you will need to use Internet Explorer to visit the Windows Update web site rather than other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox.
Go to www.windowsupdate.com. When you arrive at the site, you may see a message that your browser is checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software. This is the software that determines if your system needs any updates at this time. If you see a Security Warning box appear asking if you wish to install and run Windows Update, click Yes.
You will be asked to choose between Express (essential updates) or Custom (optional updates for other programs). Most users should click the Express button.
The Windows Update software will now check which updates you already have and which you need.
If after the scan you see the message 'No high-priority updates for your computer are available' this means the most important updates including security fixes for Windows are already installed on your system and you can leave Windows Update for now.
